SCALE-UP

With funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Communities (formerly CHF International) implemented the Slum Communities Achieving Livable Environment with Urban Partners (SCALE-UP) Project in some selected poor urban settlements in Ghana and India.

 Between 2007 and 2010, Global Communities implemented the SCALE-UP Project in Ghana in Accra and Sekondi-Takoradi specifically in Ayidiki, Sabon Zongo, Agbogbloshie, Jamestown, Usshertown, Avenor, Nima, Kwesimintsim,  New Takoradi, Kojokrom and Ngyeresia supporting pro-poor slum upgrading interventions with the inputs of three sectors:

  • Local non-governmental Organizations (Youth and Women Foundation, People's Dialogue, Ga Mashie Centre for Educational and Environmental Development, Nimba Community Support Services, Daasgift Quality Foundation, Friends of the Nation, Community Land Development Foundation, Professional Network Associates)
  • Local Governments and Governmental Departments and Agencies (Accra and Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assemblies, Institute of Local Government Studies, GWCL)
  • Private Sector Companies (HFC Bank)

SCALE-UP sought to increase incomes and assets of residents of poor urban communities, improve housing conditions and create more jobs, cleaner living environmenrs and better community advocacy.
